Your best weapon in my opinion is to read as much as possible and picking up a style book like Strunk & White. I have spent a lot of time researching certain phenomena only to find that there is no authoritative source on what is correct. The other issue is that there is no giant book of what is/isn't correct. The problem with this is that there are essentially an infinite combination of patterns that work and don't work for very subtle reasons. What ends up happening is linguists find speech patterns that pop up repeatedly and then write rules that tell the system that the pattern is correct/incorrect. Machine learning unfortunately isn't very good at this either. Language is very tricky so a lot of the time it isn't feasible to write accurate rules for these systems. Why do I sometimes see are with company or team names, as in "Apple are announcing a new iPhone"? Why do I sometimes hear constructions like needs washed or needs looked at? Is it "between you and me" or "between you and I"? How do I indicate possession when something belongs to two people? Should I use a or an before this word, acronym, or initialism?
